Simple Hummus Recipe (2024)

Hummus is something that I eat every single day without fail! I eat it on the side of main meals with salads and cooked vegetables, and it’s also one of my go-to snacks. I like to have some peeled chopped carrots in the fridge so when I’m feeling peckish, all I have to do is open the fridge, take out the hummus and carrots and devour! I also like to have it with rice cakes when I run out of carrot sticks and I’m too lazy to peel more!

What is hummus?

Hummus, or hummus bi tahina as we call it in the Middle East (literally translates to chickpeas with tahini) is a dip made by blending together chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic and salt. Very simple but bursting with flavour and so good for you!

Hummus is one of those dips that has gained so much popularity over the past few years. Everyone is eating it now! I however grew up in the Middle East so hummus was something we ate on a regular basis, homemade of course! My mum made everything from scratch and hummus was no exception. I have fond memories of being a kid and my mum giving me a big tablespoon of hummus that I would lick and take my time to enjoy, no bread, no nothing, just HUMMUS! There is even footage of me (6 or 7 years of age?) at my brother’s birthday party eating hummus off a spoon. Ahhh memories!

I know you can buy hummus anywhere and there are so many different variations in supermarkets, but there is something special about making your own at home. You can customise it to suit your own taste buds (for example, hubby doesn’t like it garlicy so I use little garlic when I make it), and you know exactly what’s going in to it, no hidden nasty and unnecessary ingredients!

How to make a simple hummus recipe

Hummus is so easy to make, you just need a few ingredients that you can easily get hold of, a blender or food processor and bowl to serve it in! I filmed a short video (less than 3 minutes) showing you just how quick and easy it is to make this simple hummus recipe.

Simple Hummus Recipe

Ingredients

  1. 1 (400g) can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  2. Juice of 1 lemon
  3. 1/3 cup (5 tbsp) tahini/sesame paste
  4. 1-2 garlic cloves (use more if you like!)
  5. 1/4-1/2 tsp salt
  6. A splash of water – if you want a thinner consistency

Garnish

  1. Paprika
  2. Parsley
  3. Drizzle of olive oil

Method

  1. Drain and rinse your chickpeas well – If you would prefer using dried chickpeas, soak them in a bowl of water overnight then cook them in a pan of simmering water for an hour the next day.
  2. Place your chickpeas along with the remainder of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. If you think the hummus is too thick, you can add a little bit of water at a time and continue blending until you’re happy with the consistency

We always have 2-3 types of hummus at my house at any given time. It’s great on sandwiches, as a dip and my favorite way is on collard green wraps with tons of veggies! Love this simple but tasty version! Thanks for sharing and great pics!
