How to Make a Flower Crown

Flower crowns have been a popular floral accessory for a few years now. I love flower crowns for parties – especially bachelorette parties or bridal showers! There really is something so special (and extra!) about wearing a beautiful custom floral piece in your hair. I also love flower crowns for flower girls at a wedding. There is nothing more adorable than a little flower girl in a crown and they are always sooo excited to wear them over on wedding days.

I often get asked how to make a flower crown by friends looking to do a DIY. Honestly, making a flower crown is not a difficult task (time consuming, yes, but not difficult with a bit of practice!). In this post I am going to teach you how to make a flower crown using just one type of flower. A fluffy filler style of flower works best for this DIY. I find the end look is simple and sophisticated but still super fun!

How to Make a Flower Crown – What You’ll Need

  • Floral Wire
  • Floral Tape
  • Fresh Filler Flowers

First things First – How to Use Floral Tape

Floral tape is a necessary tool when making a flower crown. This tape releases an adhesive to attach to itself as you pull on the tape tightly. It does not feel sticky off the bat. To attach two things together, whether it is 2 wires, wire and flower stems, or 2 flower stems, start at the top. Hold the two items together along with the flower tape. Wrap the tape around the two items pulling the tape tightly as you go. Overlap the tap by about 1/2 to 3/4 of the tape width and keep the tape flat and straight (don’t let it twist). Practice securing two pieces of wire together to get the hang of the motion. I like to keep the tape attached to the roll while using it and rip the tape off the roll when I’m at the end of securing whatever it is I’m securing. How to make a Flower Crown

This DIY flower crown using just fill flowers could not be more simple. The end result is light, airy, and lovely!

Great filler flowers for making a flower crown:

  • baby’s breath
  • waxflower
  • thrypoptomeme
  • limonium (that’s what I’m using here)
  • lavender
  1. Cut a long piece of wire – should be about 2″ less than the distance needed to fit around your head
  2. Using your floral tape, wrap the tape around 2″ on both ends of your wire. You are not binding anything together with the tape here – just covering the ends of the wire in tape.
  3. With the 2″ of wire on either end that is now covered in tape, create a small loop on both ends of your flower crown like the loops shown in the image above. Your ribbons will be threaded through these loops at the end.
  4. Cut small pieces of your fill flower (approx. 3″ in length like those in the image above) and remove any foliage or flowers at the bottom 1″ of the stems.
  5. Start at one end of your crown and attach your first piece of filler to your flower crown using floral tape in the described method. Do not rip the tape afterwards, you can use one long strand of tape for the entire crown. Place your next stem of flower on your wire form so that the flower covers the tape that attached the previous stem. Secure this stem with the tape. Again, do not rip the tape but keep it attached to secure the next piece. Attach the next piece so that it covers the tape from the previous piece and so on. All flowers should be placed going in the same direction and with the the flower facing outward. Feel free to use small clusters of flowers rather than a single stem if you want your crown to be a bit more full.
  6. Cover your entire wire crown with your fill flower.
  7. Thread a ribbon through both loops and use the ribbon to adjust, tighten, and tie the crown on your head. Enjoy wearing your custom flower crown around!
