X-Men '97 Season 2 Gets A Release Update From Marvel Studios Exec (2024)

A new update has been given about when Marvel Studios may be releasing X-Men '97 season 2. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie timeline is still working on its X-Men reboot, the world of animation has kept 2024 busy with the iconic mutants. Serving as a sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series, Disney+ brought X-Men '97 to the Marvel audience this year, continuing one of the best Marvel animated properties of all time.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant to go more in-depth about the X-Men '97 season 1 finale, Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, was asked if he could give an idea of when in 2024 the world may get season 2 on Disney+. As X-Men '97 season 2 is in production, Winderbaum gave the following update on the new season in regards to its release:

Something we learned in animation, where I learned in animation that has been very well known for animators for decades, is that there's a season one and two lag because the studio or network wants to see how successful the first season is before they greenlight the second season and it takes so long to make anything animated that it often causes a pretty significant delay. In fact, Invincible did a great bit in their second season, they go to a fake Comic-Con and explain it to the audience which I thought was so hysterical. We were lucky enough to get a green light on the second season before we wrapped the first season because of the quality of the show. I wish it could come out tomorrow, the reality is it just takes time and we want to make it as good as it can possibly be.

Why X-Men '97 Season 2 Taking Its Time Is Good

Season 2 Needs To Dedicate The Time & Effort To Flesh Out The Apocalypse Arc.

Following X-Men '97 episode 10 ending, it goes without saying that the expectations for season 2 are higher than ever. As the team split up into two and spread across different timelines, the mutants are about to face their biggest challenge yet. With Apocalypse also set to serve a big role in X-Men '97 season 2, Marvel Studios is right to give the production team proper time to finish the new season.

It has been documented that X-Men '97 season 1 had a huge production commitment before it landed on Disney+. Given the extremely positive response to their first season, the creative team has to make sure that X-Men '97 season 2 lives up to expectations, as well as exceeds them. It's also taking into account that, given how Marvel Studios did their best to replicate X-Men: The Animated Series' animation style for X-Men '97, that alone is a major mission for the animators.

It wouldn't be shocking if X-Men '97 season 2 perhaps arrives sometime in the second half of 2025, as Marvel Studios has Daredevil: Born Again season 1 lined up for March, with Ironheart also eyed for next year.
