Make Your Own Homemade Swiffer Solution for WetJet for Pennies • Everyday Cheapskate (1)

If you own a Swiffer WetJet Spray Mop, chances are you absolutely love it. But let me guess: You’re not wild about those expensiverefills—the bottles of cleaning solution and disposable cleaning pads. Even if you don’t use a Swiffer, you’ll love these DIY Swiffer solution recipes for cleaning wood, laminate, luxury vinyl, and tile floors, dispensing them from your spray bottle of choice.

The Problem with Swiffer Refills

One of the biggest drawbacks of the WetJet system is its “refill” design, which typically means tossing out an empty bottle and buying a new one. Just try to pry that lid off for refilling—it’s nearly impossible without damaging the bottle. And with each refill bottle often costing upwards of $6 (on a good day!) and disposable pads adding up at around $0.60 each, those expenses can pile up fast.

Well, you can forget all that bad news because I’ve found a way to safely open that bottle—no wrench required—and make it totally reusable, so no leaks! Pair that with my homemade Swiffer solutions and reusable pads, and you’ll keep both your floors and your wallet in top shape.

How to Refill a Swiffer WetJet Bottle

Here’s my tried-and-true method for getting that stubborn lid off so you can keep your floors sparkling without the constant cost of brand-new refills.

  1. Start by setting a small pan of water on the stove and bring it to a gentle boil. Once it’s boiling, turn off the burner but keep the pan on the hot stove.
  2. Carefully hold your empty Swiffer WetJet bottle upside down, submerging the cap and a bit of the bottle neck into the hot water. (We’re giving it a quick “spa treatment” to soften the lid.)
  3. Hold it in the hot water for about 90 seconds.
  4. Using a hot pad or oven mitt, twist off the cap—it should come off without a fight!

The heat softens the little plastic tabs that make the lid nearly impossible to twist off under normal circumstances. Just a heads-up: resist the temptation to trim off those tabs to make future refills easier. Doing so will make your bottle leak!

Once the lid’s off, use a funnel to pour in your homemade Swiffer solution (recipe below), twist the cap back on, and you’re all set! Need a visual? Here’s a quick video demo.

DIY Wood & Laminate Floor Cleaner Solution

Skip the expensive store-bought refills and try this simple, effective DIY solution for wood and laminate floors:

How to Measure "Parts" in Recipes

If “parts” sound confusing, here’s an example where 1 part equals 1/4 cup:

  • 1/4 cup alcohol (1 part)
  • 1 cup distilled water (4 parts)

You can make 1 part any measurement you prefer—just adjust proportionally.

Combine these ingredients in a small bucket or container, stir well, and use a funnel to pour the solution into your spray bottle—or even better, your refilled Swiffer WetJet bottle.

Why Alcohol Works Wonders on Wood Floors

Alcohol, whether it’s isopropyl (rubbing alcohol–70% is most common, but 91% works well, too), denatured, or even clear spirits like vodka, is a fantastic cleaning product. It not only lifts dirt and grime but also disinfects, which you may recognize from its use in medical settings. Plus, alcohol has a nearly neutral pH, making it gentle on finished wood and laminate surfaces, and it dries quickly, so your floors are left streak-free and safe from moisture damage.

DIY Luxury Vinyl & Tile Floor Cleaner Solution

Give your vinyl and tile floors a deep, sparkling clean with this easy, cost-effective recipe:

Combine all ingredients in a bucket or container, mix thoroughly, and use a funnel to transfer the solution into a spray bottle or your reused Swiffer WetJet bottle. Pro Tip: If opting for lemon juice, avoid varieties like Meyer lemons that are higher in sugar—they can leave a sticky residue. Citric acid is a better choice for a residue-free clean.

Important Note: This cleaner is ideal for vinyl and tile but should NOT be used on wood or laminate floors. The vinegar and citric acid can be too harsh for these surfaces, softening and dulling their finish.

How to Make Reusable Swiffer Pads

Save money and skip the disposables with these easy DIY reusable pads for your Swiffer WetJet!

  • Microfiber Cloths or Towels: Cut a microfiber cloth or an old bath towel into rectangles. Use the Swiffer mop head as a guide, allowing about 1.5 inches of overlap on each side to easily tuck the cloth into the Swiffer’s gripper.
  • Repurposed Fuzzy Socks: Have a cozy old sock? Slip it right over the Swiffer head just like putting on a sock, and you’ve got an instant reusable pad.

After cleaning, just toss your homemade pad in the wash with other cleaning cloths. It’s that simple!

Cuisine: Household Cleaning Tips

Ingredients

  • 1 part isopropyl alcohol 70% or 91%, denatured alcohol, plain vodka, or gin
  • 4 parts distilled water recommended to avoid mineral buildup, but tap water works too
  • A few drops of Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid

Instructions

  • In a small bucket or container, combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly.

  • Using a funnel, pour the solution into your empty Swiffer WetJet container or a spray bottle of your choice.

Notes

Helpful Tips

  • Measuring “Parts”: Use any measurement for “1 part.” For example, if using 1/4 cup as a base measurement, you’d mix 1/4 cup alcohol, 1 cup water, and 2-3 drops of Dawn. Adjust quantities as needed.
  • Why Alcohol? Rubbing alcohol is an effective, pH-neutral cleaner that disinfects and evaporates quickly, helping floors dry faster and stay streak-free. It’s ideal for keeping wood and laminate floors clean and protected.

How to Refill a Swiffer WetJet Bottle

  1. Heat a pot of water until boiling, then turn off the burner.
  2. Hold the empty Swiffer WetJet bottle upside down and submerge the cap in the hot water for up to 90 seconds.
  3. With a hot pad or cloth, grip the lid and twist—it should come off easily.

CAUTION: Don’t cut the locking nubs off the lid, as this may cause leaking!

DIY Swiffer WetJet Tile & Vinyl Floor Cleaner Solution

Swiffer WetJet refills can add up fast. Luckily, here’s an easy, affordable refill solution designed specifically for tile and vinyl floors that delivers a powerful clean without the hefty price tag!

Prep Time5 minutes mins

Total Time5 minutes mins

Course: DIY Household Cleaners

Cuisine: Cleaning, Housekeeping

Ingredients

  • 4 cups hot water
  • 3 tbsp citric acid or 1 cup lemon juice
  • 3 cups white vinegar
  • 1 tsp Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a bucket or large container and stir well.

  • Using a funnel, pour the mixture into your empty Swiffer WetJet bottle or preferred spray bottle.

Notes

Important Notes

  • Not for Wood or Laminate: Avoid using this formula on wood or laminate floors. Vinegar and citric acid can dull and soften these surfaces over time, so stick to tile and vinyl for this recipe.
  • For Citrus Lovers: If using lemon juice, avoid varieties with high sugar content (like Meyer lemons), as they can leave a sticky residue. Citric acid powder is a great alternative if you want to skip the juice.

How to Open the Swiffer WetJet Bottle

  1. Heat a pot of water on the stove until boiling, then turn off the burner.
  2. Hold the Swiffer WetJet bottle upside down, submerging the cap and a bit of the bottle in the hot water for up to 90 seconds.
  3. With a hot pad or cloth, twist the cap, which should release easily.

CAUTION: Avoid cutting the cap’s locking nubs, as this can cause leaking in the future.

DIY Swiffer WetJet Reusable Cleaning Pads

Love your Swiffer WetJet but not the price of those disposable pads? Try these easy, budget-friendly reusable pads that work just as well!

Prep Time5 minutes mins

Total Time5 minutes mins

Course: DIY Household Cleaners

Cuisine: Housekeeping

Ingredients

  • 1 microfiber cloth cut into rectangles, or a fuzzy sock

Instructions

  • Measure & Cut: Using your Swiffer mop head as a guide, cut the microfiber cloth or towel into rectangles, leaving about 1 1/2 inches of overlap on the long sides. This lets you tuck the edges securely into the mop’s cloth holder.

  • Sock Hack: For an even quicker solution, slip a fuzzy sock over the mop head like a big stretchy cover—easy, no cutting required!

Notes

Wash & Reuse: After cleaning, toss your DIY pads in the washing machine along with your regular cleaning rags. They’re ready to go again for next time!

Where to Buy Fuzzy Socks: If you’re low on fuzzy socks, pick them up at stores like Amazon, Walmart, or Target—typically around $1.50 a pair (that’s two cleaning pads!).
