Dr. Manuel Vega Obituary - 2021 (2024)

He was an amazingly gifted physician, devoted husband, loving father, and doting abuelo. Dr. Manuel Vega, 64, of Dublin, Georgia was called home to our Heavenly Father on January 24, 2021.

Born in Havana, Cuba, he immigrated with his family to the United States at the age of 9 on a Freedom Flight. He was raised in Hoboken, New Jersey before moving to Hialeah, Florida and attending the University of Miami. He attended medical school at Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic and completed his internship and residency at Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens. He completed his cardiology fellowship at St. Francis Catholic Hospital in Port Washington, New York, where he met his wife, Ingrid, who worked as a registered nurse in the critical care unit. They married in 1986 and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he joined an existing cardiology group and practiced until 2004. That year, he relocated his practice to Dublin, Georgia and was instrumental in implementing the C-port heart program for STEMI treatment in rural area hospitals at Fairview Park Hospital.

He believed in the potential of those around him and felt his purpose in life was to positively impact the lives of others by encouraging and supporting them in achieving their dreams. He cared wholeheartedly about his family and friends and was passionate in expressing his love and his endless faith in them.

He had a thirst for knowledge, taking every opportunity to learn about a broad range of subjects, and would freely share his experience and wisdom with those around him. He felt loved by so many of his patients, hospital family, office staff, and the community. He strove at all times to provide the best possible care for his patients.

As a child adapting to a new country where he didn’t know the native language, he was motivated and determined to face those challenges. He was forever grateful to and inspired by his parents and the sacrifices they had made for him and his sisters. His persistent drive to overcome any and all obstacles was unfailing. As a father, he worked hard to set a positive example for his children and provide every opportunity for them to succeed in life. He lived up to his parents’ example and always did his best to give just as much of himself for his own children.

He loved and adored his grandchildren, and he would instantly light up in their presence. We regret that they had such a short amount of time to create memories with him, and we will forever keep his legacy alive.

Dr. Vega was preceded in death by his father, Esiquio Vega.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Ingrid; children Kristin (Will) Henson, Michael Vega, and Danielle Vega; grandchildren Liam Henson (5), Eliana Henson (3), and Micah Henson (1); mother Manuela Vega; sisters Alicia Vega and Graciela (José) Fernandez; nieces Nicole Fernandez, Kimberlee Fernandez, and Celeste Vega; and nephews Joseph Fernandez and Alexander Vega.

Private funeral services will be held for his family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Heart Association.
